Idol Interactive Results (4/04)

It was hard to see how the contestants would top last week, but overall last night’s performances delivered. The Peel Community displayed their passion for the Idol performances as well as the Peel engagement platform, cheering and booing from the comfort of their couch. In case you missed this week, download the Peel app on iTunes and be sure to join us for next week’s excitement.  Remember, the more you cheer and boo, the better your chances to win an all-expenses paid trip for 4 to Hollywood and tickets to an Idols Live! concert at the end of the season.

This week it was 80’s Night, with the contestants tackling some of the classics of this memorable music decade. After some fashion inspiration from Tommy Hilfiger, Jimmy Iovine collaborated with special guests Gwen Stafani and Tony Kanal from No Doubt to help the performers navigate this important week. As always, by the time Ryan Seacrest opened the official Fox voting, the Peel Community had weighed in and could immediately see their predicted results on the leaderboard.

Top (and Bottom) of the Charts

There were some fantastic performances this week — and a couple that were less impressive. Let’s take a look at the best and worst from last night, as determined by the Peel Community.

Peelliveaudiencecard-coltondixon-120404

At the top of last night’s leaderboard was Colton Dixon who blew the audience away with his rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” In second place was Skylar Laine who closed out the show and surprised the judges by stepping out of her country comfort zone and performed Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.” While both performances received vocal approval from Peel Community, Colton tallied a Live Audience Reaction approval rating of 73% (see his final performance card above).

Unfortunately, things were more difficult at the bottom of the leaderboard. According to the Peel Community, the bottom three performers will include

  • Jessica
  • Elise
  • DeAndre

and DeAndre could be out tonight despite giving a consistent performance and opening the show with DeBarge's “I Like It.” Ryan asked DeAndre if he felt like going first would hurt his chances and according to the Peel Community it just might. Judge Jennifer Lopez continued her public rallying for DeAndre, which seemed to work in his favor last week.

Peelliveaudience-leaderboard-120404

Audience Reaction Highlights and Lowlights

According to the Peel Live Audience Reaction chart, the most cheered highlights from last night’s show featured

  • Top performances from Colton and Skylar
  • Phillip teaming up with his brother to do a rocking rendition of Genesis’ “That’s All”
  • Joshua’s soulful rendition on Simply Red’s “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” which received the only standing ovation from the judges last night for a single performance

Meanwhile, the Peel Community voiced their displeasure by booing these lowlights, including

  • Both DeAndre’s solo performance as well as his duet with Hollie
  • Despite being one of mentor Gwen Stafani’s favorite singers on the show, Elise received her share of boos during her rendition of “I Want to Know What Love is”

Phillip’s Performance with His Brother

Last night Phillip Phillips had his brother-in-law and musical mentor on stage with him playing guitar and singing backup vocals during his performance. Phillip has consistently been a top performer and fan favorite. Fans were vocal in anticipation of his performance, even during the commercial break. During the intro to his video there was a slight increase in boos. The boos got louder during his performance, but then there was a big spike in cheers at the beginning of his song followed by a lull as people focused more on his great performance. A second big increase in cheers followed at the end of his song. The cheering went down to a fairly normal level during the judging and then went back up again when Ryan chatted with Phillip and invited his brother over to join in the conversation. The Peel Community enjoyed the family connection and hearing from Phillip’s brother.

Judging the Judges

For this week’s judging results we saw a return to form as once again Judge Jennifer Lopez received the most feedback overall, and was once again the judge the Peel Community disagreed with most strongly as she recorded the lowest net approval rating at 55%. On the positive side, Judge Randy Jackson was the judge that the Community most agreed with — although by only a narrow margin — with a net approval rating of 61%.

Duet Performance Feedback

Last night’s duet performances seemed to garner more love from the Community then the previous week’s trio performances. Both Jessica (with Joshua) and Elise (with Phillip) received more cheers for their duets then during their solo performances. Colton showed off his versatility by singing a country duet with Skylar to “Islands in the Stream.” Joshua and Jessica’s rendition of “I Knew You Were Waiting” received a standing ovation from the judges, with JLo predicting that the pair would be the final two to take the whole competition. The Community was less then friendly with DeAndre and Hollie’s performance of “I’m So Excited.” Later Hollie, despite receiving decent marks from the Peel Community was cut down to size by the judges in probably one of the harshest critiques of the night.

Tune in tonight to see if the Peel Community agrees with the official American Idol voting. We’re looking forward to next week and another Idol Interactive Experience from Peel.

Enjoy the show!

Idol Interactive Results (3/28) — is DeAndre next?

What a night of performances last night! Once again, the Peel Community displayed their passion for the Idol performances as well as the Peel engagement platform, cheering and booing at a record level of engagement. Peel users are loudly confirming their desire to do more than just "check-in" to a show they love, and are redefining "Social TV" in  the process. They're cheering and booing with the audience and interacting with both the program and the Community in a richer and more rewarding way. In case you missed this week, download the Peel app on iTunes and be sure to join us for the fun next week.  Remember, the more you cheer and boo, the better your chances to win an all-expenses paid trip for 4 to Hollywood at the end of the season!

This week presented an interesting new twist, as performers were grouped into trios and performed together in addition to their individual performance. After some fashion inspiration from Tommy Hilfiger, Jimmy Iovine returned to provide coaching with special guest Stevie Nicks, who offered her sage counsel as well as the occasional harmony collaboration. As always, by the time Ryan Seacrest opened the official Fox voting, the Peel community had weighed in and could immediately see their predicted results on the leaderboard.

Top (and Bottom) of the Charts

It was a fun week for performances — and we saw several great ones — but five standing ovations from the judges?  More on that later…

Leader_card
At the top of last night's leaderboard was Phillip Phillips (again!) applying his unique combination of passionate performance and infectious vocals toStill Rainin' and netting a standing ovation from the judges.  In second position was Jessica Sanchez, who delivered a bold yet surprisingly restrained finish to her performance of Sweet Dreams by Beyonce. While both performances elicited raucous cheers the Peel community, Phillip tallied a Live Audience Reaction approval rating of 82% (see his final performance card above).

Unfortunately, things were less fun at the bottom of the leaderboard. According to the Peel community, the bottom three performers will include

  • Skylar
  • Colton
  • DeAndre

and DeAndre could be out tonight in an especially cruel twist since a) he receive a standing ovation from the judges, and b) Jennifer Lopez made a personal appeal to build support for him.

Peelliveaudiencereaction-ai-120328

Audience Reaction Highlights and Lowlights

According to the Peel Live Audience Reaction chart, the most cheered highlights from last night's show featured

  • Top performances by Phillip and Jessica
  • Elise doing Robert Plant proud in her performance of Whole Lotta Love
  • Joshua's emotional crack at the end of his performance of Without You

Meanwhile, the Peel Community voiced their displeasure by booing these lowlights, including

  • All Trio performances, and Trio #2 in particular which was widely panned
  • DeAndre's performance (and especially Jennifer Lopez's shameless plea for voters to keep DeAndre "a few more weeks")

Judge Jennifer's Plea for Votes

And on the topic of DeAndre's performance and provocative judging feedback, we drilled down to see what the Peel Community thought of his performance and how they reacted to the judging commentary. As can be seen on the detailed chart below, "DeAndre haters" started booing early in the process, even during the commercial break!  But once DeAndre started singing, his fans picked up steam and cheered to offset booing during his performance. Then things get interesting in the reaction graph — cheering spikes as the judges give DeAndre a standing ovation, and his fans go crazy as Jennifer makes her appeal and Randy shares his praise.  However, those booing the performance switch to booing the judges (the black line on the graph) and the negative judge reaction spikes during Jennifer's pleas and Randy's support.   It appears that the Peel Community is very much split in their feedback (and feelings) on DeAndre.

Peelliveaudiencereaction-ai-deandrebrackensick-120328

Judging the Judges

This was a fun week to Judge the Judges in the Peel App.  Yes, we saw some excellent and moving performances, but did we really see five, count them, FIVE performances worthy of a standing ovation from the Judges?

The Peel Community stack ranked the five performances and agreed that four were "ovation worthy" performances as the net approval ratings for these four were all significantly positive, from top to bottom:

1. Phillip Phillips
2. Elise Testone
3. Joshua Ledet
4. Heejun Han

But the community disagreed that DeAndre was worthy of a standing ovation, giving him a net approval rating of only 37%.

5. DeAndre Brackensick

As for the judges, there were some changes this week as Judge Jennifer Lopez recorded the most cheers this week, and the highest net approval rating at 68%.  This week the Peel Community disagreed most strongly with Judge Steven Tyler, who received the most boos of the three judges and the lowest net approval rating at 56%.

Trio Performance Apathy

And while we're sure that Idol producers expected to generate some excitement by introducing the idea of Trio performances last night, based on the feedback of the Peel community, the new feature appears to be a yawn.  On average, Peel users provided less than one-third the engagement (either cheers or boos) on a trio than they did on the average contestant performance, suggesting that they didn't care much about the trio performance.  Trio 2 (Joshua, DeAndre, Heejun) was the most booed of the Trio performances, and recorded a net approval rating of just 35% — ouch!

Tune in tonight to see if the Peel community agrees with the official American Idol voting. We're looking forward to next week and another Idol Interactive Experience from Peel.

Enjoy the show!

Idol Interactive Results (3/21)

After an exciting launch last week — where the Peel community Cheered and Booed like crazy along with the audience — we're back with better performances and an even more passionate audience. In case you missed this week, download the Peel app on iTunes and be sure to join us for the fun next week.  Remember, the more you cheer and boo, the better your chances to win an all-expenses paid trip for 4 to Hollywood at the end of the season!

This week's Idol challenge required the contestants to perform the songs of Billy Joel — a classic catalog of music Americana. Jimmy Iovine returned to provide coaching with special guest Diddy who offered valuable and constructive feedback.

The Peel community was well prepared this week and invited some vocal friends to join in the experience judging by the increased volume of cheers and boos. By the end of the show at 10pm and before Ryan Seacrest opened the Fox voting, the Peel community had weighed in and could immediately view their predictions.

Top (and Bottom) of the Charts

At the top of last night's leaderboard was Colton, who performed a beautifully balanced and memorable Piano Man as if it was written just for him. In the second position on the leaderboard was Phillip, who stayed true to himself and performed an energetic rendition of Moving Out. While both performances clearly delighted the Peel community, Colton tallied a Live Audience Reaction approval rating of 83%, with a new record high number of cheers (see his final performance card below).

Colton_leader_card

Unfortunately, things were less fun at the bottom of the leaderboard. According to the Peel community, the bottom three performers will include

  • Joshua Ledet
  • Erika Van Pelt
  • DeAndre Brackensick

and DeAndre could be out tonight based on a lackluster performance of Only the Good Die Young that started the show.

Audience_reaction_graph

Audience Reaction Highlights and Lowlights

According to the Peel Live Audience Reaction chart, the most cheered highlights from last night's show featured

  • Colton's piano-accompanied performance at the end of the show
  • Phillip's stylized take on the classic Moving Out
  • Heejun's exercise regimen, including one lap around the stage

Meanwhile, the Peel community aggressively booed these lowlights, including

  • An underwhelming performance by DeAndre
  • A slow start (but nice recovery) by Heejun
  • The odd video of "support" from Hollie's Dad

Heejun's Wild Ride

Let's drill into Heejun's performance and examine his reaction graph, as the Peel results showed an interesting twist in the community's reaction from the start of his segment to the finish (shown in the net reaction chart below). When Heejun's performance card first appeared in the app, the show was at commercial break, but that didn't stop a bunch of fans from pumping him up with cheers. Almost immediately, the cheering was countered by a chorus of boos from fans who did not agree with the positive surge, and this negative reaction continued through the mentoring session with Diddy.  The cheers outweighed the boos at the start of the Heejun's performance, which tracked fairly neutral until the judging began.  At that point, it appears that the judges triggered a strong "sympathy" reaction from the Peel community, who began cheering like crazy through the final few minutes.

Drill_down_heejun_

Judging the Judges

As for the judges, once again the Peel community disagreed strongly with Jennifer Lopez who received the most boos of the three judges and the lowest approval rating. But in a surprising turn, Steven Tyler was the judge most in-tune with Peel users last night, with a 73% approval rating.  And as for Randy, he flew below the radar with the exception of that crazy beaded pin he was wearing…

Tune in tonight to see if the Peel community agrees with the official American Idol voting. We're looking forward to next week and another Idol Interactive Experience from Peel.

Idol Interactive Launch: Cheers, Boos & Results (3/14)

We're live – and ready to rock!

Last night was the launch of the Idol Interactive Experience from Peel, and we're very excited to finally be live! Each week, users can cheer and boo with the audience, judge the judges, and rate the performances within the Peel App. As an added reward, one lucky user will win an all-expenses paid trip for 4 to Hollywood at the end of the season! Download the app on iTunes and be sure to join us next week.

This week's Idol began with a little extra drama, based on the rumor that one of the contestants would be kicked off the show. As it turns out, the reports were accurate and Jermaine will not be back next week.  A sad turn of events, but the show must go on…

The contestants shook off the distraction and (in most cases) delivered strong performances last night – with a few clear standouts in the eyes of the Peel community. Peel users actively experienced the show in any entirely new and completely interactive way. In a Social TV first, Peel is sharing the results of the audience reaction submitted in real-time by the Peel community. This view offers a very unique perspective on the sentiment (and passion!) behind last night's Idol performances.

At the end of the night, before Ryan Seacrest even opened the voting on Fox, Peel users had rated the performances and could already see their predicted results.

At the top of the leaderboard last night was Hollie Cavanaugh, who belted out a strong version of The Power of Love. She was followed by Joshua  Ledet, who delivered a passionate performance of When A Man Loves a Woman. While both performances clearly delighted the Peel community, Hollie's Live Audience Reaction score was stunning (see her final performance card), and ended up edging out Joshua by a hair.

Peelliveaudiencecard

Who's at risk of being voted off tonight?  According to the Peel community, the bottom three will include

  • Shannon Magrane
  • DeAndre Brackensick
  • Heejun Han

and Heejun might be shown the door this evening.  A tough pill to swallow for the budding comic, but hard to argue based on his subdued and uneven performance of Right Here Waiting. Will he regret that song choice, or get a pass because of Jermaine's disqualification?

Peelliveaudiencereaction-ai-031412

As you can see from the Peel Live Audience Reaction chart, the most cheered highlights from last night's show featured the more memorable moments…

  • Both Hollie's and Joshua's performances lit up the cheer scoreboard
  • Jennifer called Joshua's performance “The best thing I've ever seen on American Idol.”
  • Despite the fact that the judges were down on her performance, Jessica Sanchez was cheered by the Peel Community to the number three position

Meanwhile, the Peel community loudly booed these lowlights, including…

  • Performances by DeAndre and Heejun led the boo chorus
  • The Producers' meeting with Jermaine to review his legal issues – but the boos turned to cheers when his touching rehearsal performance was shown

Even more interesting, the Peel data showed that while judge Jennifer Lopez received the most cheers from the Peel community, she was also the most booed of the three judges. Randy was the judge most in-tune with Peel users last night, with a nearly 70% net positive rating. Based on participation, the Peel community enjoys cheering and booing the judges – as if they were in the show audience!

Tune in tonight to see If the Peel community agrees with the official American Idol voting. And what excitement will next week bring?  Stay tuned and don't miss the Idol Interactive Experience from Peel.

Enjoy the show!

Expanding Personalized TV Platform with Samsung

Toppicks-withremote
Have you heard the latest news? Peel has eliminated another barrier between TV lovers and their favorite shows. The Peel Personalized TV experience is now available pre-installed new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Yes, Peel has partnered with a global leader in technology to bring you a fully integrated and completely seamless entertainment experience.

The innovative new Samsung tablet has a built in IR blaster, which allows Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus users to directly control their TV system with the Peel Smart Remote app. Users simply tap the Peel Smart Remote icon on the tablet’s home screen, choose a show from their “Top Picks” or browse and discover a new show, then tap “Watch on TV”.  It’s like magic – Peel allows users to control their home entertainment system with just a tap.

In a recent study done by Nielsen, 40% of tablet and smartphone owners in the U.S. used their devices daily while watching TV. The evolution of the “second screen” experience is unfolding rapidly. Consumers are beginning to move beyond simply watching TV and towards a richer interaction with their TV programs.  With tablets, smartphones and second screen companion apps that bring even more excitement to television, the second screen is beginning to change the way TV viewers engage with their shows. Peel’s integration on the Galaxy Tab represents one big step towards this future vision of television, and gives the consumer more personalized control of their TV experience.

We’re very excited about our collaboration with Samsung and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, and we hope you enjoy this latest innovation.  But we’re not done yet! We’re working hard to bring easier, more personalized and richer TV experiences to living rooms everywhere.

Now in Peel: Multi-room support

UPDATE: Version 1.1.2 works great for multiple locations
Last week, Peel launched a free update to the Peel app that creates an interface for using Peel program discovery and universal control in multiple locations.  This is great to find your favorite programs while traveling, and it creates a pretty unique opportunity to use the same mobile device to control multiple entertainment systems, whether they're in different rooms, different houses, or even different states.  You still do have to be on the same network as the Peel cable to use control (i.e., you can't control a system from a remote location).

Below are hints on how to set up Peel in different locations.

The free app
For the Peel guide, you can now see program information in several locales, which is great for traveling. For example, if you are visiting somewhere, and you'd like to see your personalized program information, just add the new zip code and provider information. Instantly, your favorite programs are right there in your top picks, and the channel information is keyed to the new provider. I used it this week to find the NHL playoffs in an airport restaurant in Los Angeles while a clearly frustrated bartender was forced to flip through all the sports options. Telling him the channel number was his best tip of the day.

Here's how to set up Peel for using just the guide in another location:

  1. Go into settings
  2. Tap Room, under Setup
  3. You'll see a '+' sign at the top of the screen. Tap that.
  4. Select "I don't have a Peel cable". If you have a Peel universal control system, this won't affect your current system – remember, you're setting up a whole new location.
  5. Select Use as Guide
  6. Enter the new zip code and provider. Hint – if you don't know the zip code of your current location, you can find it in the Maps app by tapping the location arrow.

Now you're set to use Peel in this new location*. To switch back and forth between locations, simply tap Room in your settings and tap the location you'd like to use. Be sure to name them so you can easily distinguish each place – I already have locations set for my family's houses, the nearby sports bar, as well as the two Peel systems in my house. It's great!

The Peel fruit

Adding another location allows you to control another Peel system, whether that is another room in your house running a second Peel fruit (see the important note below) or using an entirely different home entertainment system in another house, such as a system belonging to friends or family. This differs in setup, because you'll be pairing with another Peel and entering all the equipment from the new home entertainment system.

Note: although Peel is sold as an entire system, setting up another room in your house does not make use of the second Peel cable. You'll just pair the second fruit with your original Peel cable. Setting up a second Peel cable in your house can cause interference problems.

Setting up a new location to use a second fruit:

  1. Go into settings
  2. Tap Room, under Setup
  3. You'll see a '+' sign at the top of the screen. Tap that.
  4. Tap "The Peel cable is plugged in."
  5. Pair the new Peel fruit with the system, and continue through setup as you usually would.

All set*. Again, be sure to name this new location, so it will be easy to switch back and forth in the future.* If you'd like to set up additional locations, tap edit, then tap "New Room" and repeat the setup

Enjoy this new feature!

* If you'd like to set up additional locations, tap edit, then tap "New Room" and repeat the setup

Coming soon - a new screen for your TV

We've all been so excited about the new version of the Peel app hitting the app store and the great success of our opening bids that we haven't talked for a while about how different it is to watch TV with Peel.  For some time, there's been a trade off between cool TV and easy TV.  The more sources you have, the more equipment you have, the more channels you have all mean more things to learn, set up, and deal with when it's time to watch.  My biggest tutorial for every new baby sitter has always been "never mind the kid - let me show you how to watch TV."

That's about to change – Peel makes things easier, but it actually goes beyond that. It's our thought that 10-foot interactions are necessarily simplified, and that for more complicated interactions, it's more comfortable to be closer.  We've gotten used to working with menus, displays, and guides on a screen across the room because that was where it needed to be.  But what if the tasks that were easier to be up close were right there in your hand, and the beautiful big screen across the room was reserved for your shows?  Things can suddenly change.

First, there are a lot more options for context around choosing a show – artwork, search capabilities, program sorting and information all comes natural.  Next, smartphones are just that: they're smart.  Learning, personalization, localization, and more are just the beginning of the options available as we put these amazing little computers to work on our TV choices.  Finally, once you're watching, you really want control to disappear.  The BEST case would be if you thought it was too loud, the system would turn down. We aren't there yet, but our Gesture Pad comes close – a flick of your thumb, and the system turns down.  Your eyes never leave the program, which was why you turned it on in the first place!

Once you make controlling your system truly disappear, there are lots of more options for this new kind of second screen.  Making TV truly social isn't about your Twitter feeds scrolling across the most exciting parts of your favorite new show.  In our estimation, it's about socializing around the program the way you do when you see a movie - sharing, recommending, prodding someone during the exciting parts are all naturally social activities when you're being entertained.  Right now, we have intimations of our social experience in Peel. Coming soon, we'll be taking full advantage of this second-screen entertainment system, just like we have with discovery and control.  It really is TV more friendly.

Peel universal control - TV a lot more friendly

 Why we're here
At Peel, we've felt for some time that it's getting tougher and tougher to sit back and just watch TV.  While it's awesome that we have seemingly unlimited choices of shows to watch, finding a show and actually getting it onto your TV has become tough–channels are impossible to remember, grids are painful to navigate, remotes are all over the house, and sources are multiplying like rabbits in the Spring.  When you turn on TV, you're just looking to see your shows.  We can help with that.

Peel-34

Why we're here
At Peel, we've felt for some time that it's getting tougher and tougher to sit back and just watch TV.  While it's awesome that we have seemingly unlimited choices of shows to watch, finding a show and actually getting it onto your TV has become tough–channels are impossible to remember, grids are painful to navigate, remotes are all over the house, and sources are multiplying like rabbits in the Spring.  When you turn on TV, you're just looking to see your shows.  We can help with that.

The Peel app
We designed Peel to put the shows first.  Peel suggests programming you like, and it remembers when you interact with one, whether by sharing it, indicating it's a favorite, or cutting it from your Top Picks.  The more you use the guide, the more tailored your Top Picks get.

Control2_1

How it works
Peel universal control takes it to the next step.  Once you choose a show, simply tap Watch it on TV, and bang: you're watching.  The grid is gone, channels and sources become invisible, and your inputs change like magic. It truly is TV made friendlier, but we didn't stop there.

Control2_2

The Gesture Pad
As a tiny touchscreen with simple and immediate interaction, a smart phone or tablet is the perfect place to choose and access a show.  However, once you're watching, your attention should be on the big screen. With no plastic buttons, a glass screen can be tough to navigate without looking. To address that, after you choose to watch a show, our interface switches to what we call the Gesture Pad.  Want more volume?  Simply swipe up, anywhere on your screen.  Swipe down for volume down, and right or left to channel surf up and down.  Tap in the middle for mute, or double tap anywhere on the screen to switch to menu control.  Look, ma–no eyes!

Fruit_pear
The Peel fruit
How do we make all this happen?  A little love, a little magic, and a little orb we call the Peel fruit. The Peel fruit sits almost anywhere in your living room, with no lights, no buttons, and no cables, and it controls your whole entertainment system, including the TV, cable box, Blu-Ray player, AV receiver, and more.  No more aiming at the system while your complicated remote goes through a long series of commands: control simply just happens. Your iPhone talks to the fruit through the other part of our system, the Peel cable, which plugs into your wireless router.  The Peel cable sends off commands, and the Peel fruit never misses–even when you're in the other room grabbing a beer.

More news soon
Over the next few weeks, we'll post more about how the controls work, how to switch activities, when you can expect to see Peel on retail shelves and, of course, all our favorite shows.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to write me.

Stay tuned,
Alec
